Pins we like: in praise of plain

16 Jul

Shove aside the glitter, mod podge, and nostalgia, and Pinterest is full of fantastic ideas and recipes. I lean towards the ones that don’t pretend to be any of the following:

  • Art
  • Fine dining
  • “Thinspo”
  • Hipster fashion
  • The key to finally losing those last 10 pounds
  • The key to happiness, preferably in a trendy font written on a blackboard / piece of salvaged barn wood

Here’s a few pins that fill me with a sense of calm, rather than rage. Hopefully they’ll do the same for you.

An image of simple cut up strawberries.

Is the fact that someone felt the need to remind us that fruit can be eaten plain a little pinfuriating? Yes. I’m just glad that the strawberry massacre appears to be over.

Over 14,000 repins of a book that is not Twilight or 50 Shades of Misogyny? COLOUR ME SHOCKED (& HAPPY).

An image of the first edition of The Great Gatsby.

Let’s all thank Baz Luhrman for reigniting the happy furor around this book.

I know what you’re thinking about the pin below: what the what?

A picture of two bats hanging, flipped, so it looks like they're standing up.

You know why I like this image? It’s very rare to find nature on Pinterest that’s un-cutified. These are bats, doing their bat thing. These are not a pet that Zooey Deschanel would own. They’re not bat wallpaper, not bat handbags, they’re just bats. The gulf between real nature and Pinterest nature is huge, it’s the same gulf that exists for fauxhemians, as demonstrated on Portlandia:

I love Portlandia. And when it isn’t forced-twee or covered in mod podge, I love Pinterest. All I need is strawberries, The Great Gatsby and bats.
