Glitter and spankings

5 Aug

Apologies to everyone who thought this was a post on Twilight or 50 Shades of Misogyny. No, this is a post about the decidedly unsexy topic of parenting.

There’s a fork in the road of parenting that every mom and dad comes to: the way of glitter, or the way of spanking. Judging from this pin, many Pinterest parents have chosen the well-beaten path of corporal punishment (see what I did there?).

A screencap of a pin for time out glitter bottles, used ot calm a child down. Some have commented that they're a great idea, and someone has said what happened to real discipline.

More pinners bemoan the dearth of spanking below:

More debate around the spanking pin. One mom says that she spanks her 18 month old, and says the glitter bottle could help.

I grew up without spanking–perhaps I could be used as a strong argument for spanking. However, those in the spanking community, please let me know: is it normal to spank an 18 month old? Children under 2 years are still very much babies.

Jesus is brought into the comment war.It is, apparently, normal to equate spanking with the teachings of Jesus. Although, I’m pretty sure the phrase “spare the rod, spoil the child” didn’t come from the Bible. Also, threatening your child with Jesus’ disapproval is a totally effective and appropriate way to get them on the Christian wagon.

Dawn Palmer comments After reading this it seems that a few adults could use this timeout bottle! 😨 ⚐ Thumbnail of Yasmin Myrick Yasmin Myrick i also have a 1, 2, & 3 year old , & i would totally use this to clam them down, rather then beating them! ⚐ Thumbnail of Melissa Is Awesome Melissa Is Awesome And THIS is why 6 year olds are getting arrested. ⚐ Thumbnail of Joy Henderson Joy Henderson While I don't think this would be cool for my kids, I can see it working on a few kids of my friends who would need this just to focus somewhere while in time out, instead of continued tantrums. I don't see it so much as a reward, but just a tool to dial down the madness. I should also mention, I have 3 boys and have made it 6 1/2 years without spanking any of them, and believe me, they are all very well behaved little guys. You needn't hit a child to instill respect.

Wait, what? Is it the glitter bottles that lead to 6-year-olds being arrested, or spanking?

Conclusion: Pinterest is full of Mrs. Trunchbulls. I wonder if their homes have chokeys?

the exact phrase of “spare the rod, spoil the child” is not in the bible, but I think what people are referring to when saying that it’s in there is Proverbs 13:24 ” He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.”
